Stay Cool in Liaison’s Swanky Rooftop Pool

Despite the solstice not taking place until June 20, the occurrence of Memorial Day Weekend and temperatures consistently above 80 degrees mean that it’s finally summer in D.C. For most that brings a feeling of dread, as the overbearing heat and swampy humidity have them already wishing it was autumn. But Washington experts, like Hungry Lobbyist readers, know where they can go to beat the heat this season. Our top pick to stay cool? The Liaison Hotel’s swanky rooftop pool.

Located just a stone’s throw from the Senate gardens, this boutique Capitol Hill hotel is an oasis in the otherwise busy area surrounding Union Station. We stopped by for the pool’s official opening, which was sponsored by both Liaison and the Washingtonian, and were impressed with what we saw. The theme is upscale nautical, with navy, white and orange adorning the striped furniture and patterned pillows. Rooftop patrons initially enter into the dining area, where strings of patio lights help keep the party going long after the sun goes down. It was here that Art and Soul, Art Smith’s delightful Southern eatery located in the first floor of the hotel, provided summer bites to party goers. While everything was delicious, the spicy sausage and potato salad were especially tasty.

DSC_0913For casual patrons who aren’t hotel guests (or attending an opening party!), a day pass for the pool costs $35. This allows guests to swim from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with food and beverage service until 11 p.m. The pool menu was created by Art and Soul’s executive Chef Douglas Alexander; we have our eyes on the pressed six cheese toastie and the peanut butter, banana, marshmallow and honey sandwich. If you plan on eating, drinking, tanning, and ultimately, napping, then spring for a comfy cabana which can be rented for $150 to $250.

If you don’t have an entire day to spare, hit the Liaison for happy hour Monday through Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. (rooftop entrance is free after 5 p.m.), or for one of their weekly poolside events. This includes $13 poolside yoga classes by Embrace Yoga, Support a Cause Tuesdays where 10 to 15 percent of food and beverage sales support a partnering charitable organization and Saturday night Art Soirees, which features local art and live music from 7 p.m. to close.

Although we didn’t take a dip in the pool, this rooftop is an amazing place to relax and enjoy summer sunsets. Whether you spend your entire day having fun in the sun, or stop by after work for a refreshing drink, the Liaison’s pool is one that can’t be missed this season!
