The Best & Worst Dressed – The 69th Annual Primetime Emmys

The 69th Annual Emmy Awards were this weekend and although the ratings were weak, the fashion was not. There were so many bold fashion choices from the TV stars on their big night. Some risks were worth it, some did not quite pay off but all of them were exciting to watch! Here are the best and worst looks of the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. Enjoy!

Worst Dressed

 Tracee Ellis-Ross

Tracee Ellis-Ross in Chanel. It is always difficult for me to critique Chanel and I also love how brave Tracee is with her fashion choices. However, I am not a fan of this look. My main problem with this dress is that it felt tired. I have seen some version of it, so many times before. It was too busy and did not work for me, but I do appreciate the bold choice.

Vanessa Bayer

Vanessa Bayer in Zac Posen. This pattern, the fit, everything about this dress was just not flattering. She is such a funny woman and has a bubbly personality, so I understand the desire to do a floral. This was NOT the floral to choose.

Ajiona Alexus

Ajiona Alexus in unknown. She is one of the most stunning women I have ever seen, but this choice is just bad. It is distracting and costume-like. I am assuming she knows the designer personally, because there is no other excuse.

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda in Brandon Maxwell. I cannot believe I am about to say this about Jane Fonda, but she looked like a Real Housewife of Miami and not in a good way.  The color of the dress is one thing but the metallic heels and the long weave pony tail was another. It was just all too much and way too young. Sorry Jane!

Donald Glover

Donald Glover in Gucci. The fit was impeccable, but the purple color and the yellow pocket square made this accomplished winner look like he was headed to the Teen choice Awards. I wish it was a different color, it would have been perfect.

Ellie Kemper

Ellie Kemper in Jenny Packham. I wish the bottom of this dress was not sheer. It made the entire look very Prom. I love the blue hue on this fiery red head and the jewels were beautiful but the sheer paneling cheapened this ensemble.

Jessica Biel

Jessica Biel in Ralph & Russo Couture. The funny thing is that this look has made it on a few “best dressed” lists. I do not get it. The messy draping, the ill fitting hem, the glitter, the big hair. There was so much going on. Not to mention, the mismatched metallic shoe pairing. I was really surprised by the choice and I just did not understand this look. I will say that from the back this was beautiful, but not her best.

Sarah Paulson

Sarah Paulson in Carolina Herrera. I know it is straight from the runway, and I know I should probably love it. But, alas, I do not. Sarah is the coolest girl in Hollywood and she always makes bold moves. But the hair, bag and shoes paired with this look took it from hip to a little matronly.

Sarah Hyland

Sarah Hyland in Zac Posen. Let me start by saying, that new redish hue to her hair is incredible and the makeup was perfect. But the dress had alot of stomach showing for a prestigious awards show (even her spanx peaked out on the red carpet). The pattern reminded me of a Fall Crafting table. I thought it was an odd choice that came off way too casual.

Ariel Winter

Ariel Winter in unknown. It is pretty clear to me that Ariel really doesn’t care about being on the Worst Dressed list. It is a consistent position that I am almost convinced she enjoys, as long as she can wear as little as possible. She is a huge fan of leaving nothing to the imagination and once again, she nailed that.

Ryan Michelle Bathe

Ryan Michelle Bathe in unknown. She is such a  beautiful woman and I also actually like this canary yellow color on her. However, the hem lines were all over the place and the lace large ball gown skirt seemed ridiculous. This dress was too loud for such for this event and this gorgeous woman.

Samantha Bee

Samantha Bee in Rubin Singer. She looked like the villain from a kids show or Poison Ivy. I did not understand the collar, the sleeves or the silk details. It all just came off very cold and menacing.

Julie Bowen

Julie Bowen in Alberta Ferretti. It was NOT a good night for the Modern Family cast. I think all 4 leading ladies ended up on my worst dressed list. Julie Bowen’s dress reminds me of a 80’s bridesmaid dress that you just really want to forget that you wore. The odd pleated side ruffles really confused me. It was a miss.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra in Balmain. I think her inner pageant queen took too much control in this decision. I did not know where to look first. The jewels, the feathers, the silk and then the heavy makeup. It was just so overwhelming for me. It was one of my least favorites of the night.

Robin Wright

Robin Wright in unknown. Robin is a badass, this look is not. The top of the gown is so ill-fitting and unflattering. It came down far too low and looked like it was too large for her. If the odd cut on the torso and neckline were different, I think it could have been great.

Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox in Naeem Khan. Laverne was a victim of bad tailoring and an ill-fitting bust. I love the idea of a gunmetal grey, liquid beaded dress, but the plan was poorly executed and the ruffle sleeves were confusing and unnecessary.

Gabriell Union

Gabriell Union in Zuhair Murad. I am always sad to see Gabrielle on this list, but lately it has become frequent. She is so gorgeous, I just do not understand some of her choices. Take this Zuhair Murad gown for example. What is with that odd mother-of-the-bride shawl? I know this type of dress is a bit played out, but I think it still would have been beautiful without the cape.

Best Dressed

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman in Calvin Klein by Appointment. This woman has really become a complete fashion icon. This red dress was absolute perfection on a perfect specimen. The tea length hem gave it a fun touch. It was a clean and classic choice.

Millie Bobby Brown

Millie Bobby Brown in Calvin Klein. One of my favorites of the night, and it is on a teenager! Millie is absolute PERFECTION in this Calvin Klien white dramatic dress. Everything from her hair, to the tulle skirt and the ruby studded slippers were just ideal. This girl is going to be major.

Claire Foy

Claire Foy in Oscar de la Renta. Yes, the Queen rocked a jumpsuit and it was a royal success. She looks absolutely haunting in this young, fresh look. Her hair, make-up, suit and shoes were seamless. I could not get enough.

Aziz Ansari

Aziz Ansari in Salvatore Ferragamo. He looked completely custom in the beauitful suit. It fit him like a glove. The color was perfect and the shoes were the cherry on top. There is nothing better than a perfectly done tux. This Master of None, has mastered the tux.

Yvonne Strahovski.

Yvonne Strahovski in unknown. Hello Yvonne! This woman is gorgeous and this sexy dress did not hide one inch of her. The bold red and barely-there accessories were really well done. I was not a big fan of the black heels, and it was almost too much skin for me, but I can handle a little compromise for this stunner.

Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore in Carolina Herrera. This will be one of the most controversial looks from the night. I think it is pretty fabulous. It fits her perfectly and I love the beautiful construction. Also, that pop of color with those pink lips is just too cute. Mandy, we missed you like Candy.

Yara Shahidi

Yara Shahidi in Gucci. She looks like a beautiful little princess in this totally charming Gucci gown. It was so tasteful and the perfect color on her skin tone. The make-up was as light and beautiful as the dress was. It was so glamorous and age appropriate.

Kiernan Shipka

Kiernan Shipka in Mui Mui. She looks so classy, cute and youthful. Which is perfect for this young Mad Men actress. The high fashion Mui Mui brand always has a flair for fun and this dress was a perfect fit.

Anna Chlumsky

Anna Chlumsky in Sachin and Babi. I am not going to lie, part of me is just excited that she did not end up on the Worst Dressed list, again. She is notorious for making seriously odd wardrobe choices. But this dress was great! It was bold and she looked confident and beautiful.

Tessa Thompson

Tessa Thompson in Rosie Assoulin. Now this was a RISK. I know this will make a lot of people confused, but this dress really stopped me in my tracks, in the best way possible. My gut reaction was that she looked fabulous! Then I had to look again to make sure I was not completely crazy! I think it is nearly impossible to pull off a lamè, rainbow pleated gown but somehow this woman did it.

Padma Lakshmi

Padma Lakshmi in Zac Posen. She looked so beautiful and cool. The high glam gown paired with the casual bob, were the perfect balance. I loved this look.

Emmy Rossum

Emmy Rossum in Zac Posen. I think Emmy is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, period. This back gown and emerald jewelry was just so gorgeous it made her sparkle, even more than usual. I have nothing to critique about his one.

Juliananne Hough

Juliananne Hough in Marchesa. She looked so beautiful in this gown. She tends to pick gowns that are so large for her tiny frame but this was perfect. It was tasteful but still young. This newlywed was radiant.

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley in Ralph Lauren. I almost did not let this pick make the cut, because I think it was missing one simple necklace or drop earrings. But Shailene looks ultra cool and beautiful in this dark green, velvet gown. I love the look and I would totally wear this. She really fit this to her personalty: low maintenance but pretty.

Thandie Newton

Thandie Newton in Jason Wu. This dress is a dream! Thandie would look good in about anything but this creamy pink, princess gown was absolutely gorgeous. The minimal jewelry was such a perfect choice for this sparkling gown. I loved this look!

Zoe Kravitz

The best risk taker of the night goes to Zoe Kravitz in Christian Dior. The rainbow and black feathers are so bold, that I really was not sure how I felt about it. But every time I see her in that gown,I am enthralled. Her face is painfully beautiful and that Mia Farrow haircut could not fit her any better. It is such a memorable look.

Worst Dressed of the Night

My pick for the Worst Dressed of the Night goes to Ryan Michelle Bathe in unknown. Her husband won an Emmy for This Is Us, but unfortunately she wins the award for worst look of the night. The dress reminded me of a flamenco costume and I could not imagine what event this would be appropriate for, but it was definitely not right for the Emmys.

Best Dressed of the Night

My pick for the Best Dressed of the night goes to Millie Bobby Brown in Calvin Klein! It was a close call between Millie and Emmy Rossum, but this look was just too good. This fashion newcomer is in for a long career if she keeps up this red carpet buzz. I loved the dress, it fit flawlessly. The ruby stoned slippers were a fun surprise and her hair and makeup kept her look young and fresh. It was a total home run!

That’s a wrap for the Best and Worst Dressed from the 69th Annual Emmy Awards. I hope you enjoyed these red carpet moments as much as I did! Hopefully, this entire award season will be as full of surprises as the Emmys were. Check back here for the latest in Red Carpet fashion!
