The 75th annual Golden Globe Awards were televised this Sunday and the night was full of beautiful celebrities and strong social messaging. As part of the “Times Up” campaign, a legal defense fund that fights for those who have suffered sexual discrimination, harassment and assault, almost every single attendee wore black. This strong theme of the night was made evident by the sea of dark gowns and suits that covered the red carpet.
Despite the narrow color palette, the celebrities were still dressed to impress. The night was full of both glamours and disastrous wardrobe decisions. So here are my picks for the best & worst dressed at the 2018 Golden Globes.
I have to put one of my favorite people on this list. Gal did not look so “wonderful” in this awkward bolero jacket and seriously outdated scrunch side dress. I did not understand the look. It seemed messy and from 2000’s. She is far too beautiful to be in something so drab.
Sarah Jessica Parker
I realize Sarah Jessica Parker has always taken risks and will always take risks. However, this Dolce & Gabbana risk did not pay off. It is far too busy and costume-like.
Halle Berry looked GORGEOUS but this see-through, short dress is WAY too casual for the Golden Globes. She looked beautiful but very out of place.
Chris Hemsworth is one of the most attractive men around, but this suit was not a good choice. It looked very busy and cheap. The fit was great, but this was too loud of a pattern choice for Thor.
I hate that I have to do this, but Catriona and Chanel left me no choice. When I initially saw this dress on camera, it was only from the waist up and I was in love! Then the camera panned down and I was completely out of love. The bottom of this dress is so awkward and unflattering. It was the nightmare ending to a story book beggining.
Kelly Clarkson had the right idea with a regal gown for this event. However, this dress was just not a success. The odd gold scale sleeve and cut of the bust makes this dress a miss.
America Ferrera & Natalie Portman
Sadly, both actresses are pictured here and both made the worst dressed list. America Ferrera’s ill-fitting, large suit jacket is covering up what looks like could be a beautiful dress. It was messy and unnecessary and made the whole look appear disheveled.
Natalie Portman looks completely swallowed up in this bland, velvet frock. She is far too petite for such a dark and heavy fabric.
Elizabeth Moss’s look is clean, but this dress is in desperate need of a belt or some time of pop. This dress came off too casual and boring for the Golden Globe Awards.
Gwendoline Christie from Game of Thrones is very statuesque, but even her height couldn’t make this busy dress work. There was just far too much going on.
Past winner Isabelle Huppert, really sparkled last year at the Golden Globes. This year she looked a bit like she was visiting from outer space. This look had too much material, too much bling and too much coverage, but her makeup and hair were beautiful.
Comedic actress Pamela Adlon is always taking edgy risks on the red carpet. However, this dress did not fit and the entire design was confusing and messy.
If Laurence continues to wear these Chinese silk frocks to red carpet events, I will continue to put him on this worst dressed list. Those red shoes, ugh.
I can ignore the fact that she is not wearing black. It is completely her choice. But no matter what color this dress was, it showed way too much skin. The dress came off inappropriate at such a highbrow gathering. This belonged at the MTV Awards.
Wow. Penelope looked so perfect in this lace Russo number. The fit was perfect and so glamours on her. I just loved this.
Sterling K. Brown
Sterling K. Brown continues to stun in his red carpet choices. This Golden Globes winner always looks so handsome and put together. This tux was perfect and the velvet jacket was a great seasonal choice.
I was a little torn on this Zuhair Murad gown worn by Catherine Zeta-Jones. She looks gorgeous and her body is incredible. However, it seems a little bit revealing on her, especially when it was on stage. Overall though, she looked so glamorous that I had to put her on the list.
Allison Williams looked so perfectly put together in this gown. I would not have changed a thing! This dress was made for her. Crisp and clean.
Allison Brie looked classically elegant. I initially thought it was a large ball gown, but it has pants built into the pleat of the dress, which makes it even better! I loved this.
Liev Schreiber consistently makes great red carpet choices. He either has impeccable taste, an incredible stylist or both. Either way, keep it up Liev!
This picture does not do this dress justice. Dakota Johnson looked so perfect in this black Gucci gown with silver detailing. The back had a silver starburst of stones and ribbon work and was just incredible. One of my favorites of the night.
In typical Zoe Kravitz style, she looked cool, effortless and glamours. I am not even sure how it is possible, but she always does it. This dress was beautiful and these emerald earrings were SPECTACULAR.
Zac Efron looked young and handsome. This all black look can be risky, but he pulled it off so well.
Not that model Kendall Jenner wouldn’t have stood out on the red carpet with her beauty alone, but this dress really added to the wow-factor. This was one of the few whimsical looks of the night and I absolutely loved it. It was young, fresh and fabulous.
Margot Robbie looked current and cool in this silk Gucci gown. The bow detailing and her smooth hair waives really completed the look.
Remember the day that Heidi Klum actually made the Best Dressed list. The famous super model always makes quirky fashion choices. Often times they are not successful, but I thought this feather frock was just the right amount of fun and fashionable.
Gillian Anderson is back in a big way. These last few award seasons, this X-Files star, has hit every carpet looking incredibly fierce and the Golden Globes were no exception.
The fashionista, Nicole Kidman, has abandon her usual Gucci frock for this beautiful Givenchy gown and she looked fabulous. Her porcelain skin and incredible body would basically look good in anything, but the beautiful craftsmanship on this gown was a great way to compliment her own beauty.
Guliana Rancic showed her inner pageant girl again this season, in this all black Sherri Hill gown. She looked beautiful and gave the red carpet a little more sparkle.
I often find Jessica Biel’s fashion choices to be confusing. Sometimes they are incredible and other times they are just odd. This dress went both ways for fashion critics. In the end, I loved it! I thought it was beautiful and delicate, yet bold.
Yvonne Strahovski is a certified babe. She always dresses to kill and this black dress was another hit for me. She tends to picks tight-fitted, sexy silhouettes and I love it. She looks fresh and flirty.
Millie Bobby Brown
Millie Bobby Brown has really become a fashion icon since Stranger Things has become such a huge success. You can find her at every major Fashion Week show and every designer is dying to dress her. Calvin Klein did a perfect job of showcasing her youth, with this trendy look.
I think Alicia Vikander is just the most adorable thing on the planet. As a fellow Swede, I am a little biased. But I think a lot of people can agree with me! Her partnership with Louis Vuitton was a match made in fashion heaven. She is not afraid to take risks and neither is LV. She looks ultra-cool in this buttoned up, black frock.
Jessica Chastain sticks to certain silhouettes and a very Hollywood-glam look. I do not fault her for knowing what works on her. She looks beautiful and that dress fits like a glove. Well done.
Diane Kruger really stunned in this gunmetal and black Prada gown. The crystal detailing and cape made this gown so interesting. I just wanted to stare at every inch. It was a bold choice, but this seasoned fashionista pulled it off perfectly.
Worst Dressed Winner
My winner for worst dressed has to go to Blanca Blanco. This is not because she did not wear black. Regardless of the color, this dress was inappropriate for the Golden Globes. There needed to be one less slit. If the midsection slit was closed or the leg slit was lower, this may have been a beautiful choice. But as is, this dress was more showgirl, than movie star.
Best Dressed Winner
My winner for best dressed has to be Dakota Johnson! This Gucci dress had everyone talking and really made her stand out in a sea of black gowns. The only thing better than the front of the dress was that incredible back! Her ponytail was a perfect way to balance this heavy glam look. Her makeup was light and young. Overall, I just thought she was the most memorable of the night and I would not have changed a thing.
That rounds up my picks for the Best & Worst Dressed for the 75th Annual Golden Globes. Stay tuned for more lists of the good, bad and the fabulous this award season!
