To satisfy all of your doughnut cravings, Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken has added four new flavors for the summer season. Cherry Pie, Happy Birthday Chocolate Cake, Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp, and Lemon Poppy Seed are joining the perennial flavors of Vanilla Glazed, Maple Bacon, PB&J, and Crème Brûlée. Don’t worry, HungryLobbyist took on the very difficult task of sampling all the new flavors. And of course we’re going to tell you our opinion so that you can go out and make an informed decision of your own. Or just try them all. That works too.
Cherry Pie
These are described as doughnuts fill with a “tart cherry jam, red cherry glaze, shortbread cookie crumble, red and pink sugar dusting”. While it isn’t bursting with filling, the filling it does have is nice and tart. A much more travel-friendly way of enjoying cherry pie this summer.
Happy Birthday Chocolate Cake
Birthday cake anything is always a successful flavor, in my opinion. Officially described as a “rich, dark chocolate cake doughnut, with vanilla glaze, vanilla Buttercream, multicolored sprinkles”, this doughnut does not disappoint. The dense chocolate doughnut is satisfying enough for a sugar-craving, even without the buttercream frosting. Honestly though, you’re eating a doughnut. Go big or go home.
Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp
This is the perfect doughnut to put on a “summer” menu. It’s mildly fruity, not too heavy, and the topping adds some texture. Astro’s description of it is simple too: “Fresh strawberry rhubarb glaze, toasted oat streusel”. I’d recommend this for your friend who doesn’t want something too sweet for dessert.
Lemon Poppy Seed
Another great summer flavor – lemon. This was another one of my favorites. It was a nice light doughnut but had just enough lemon flavor to make it interesting. It’s officially described as having “lemon glaze, poppy seed”. Think of it as a grown-up glazed doughnut.
Happy National Doughnut Day!
