You may still be adjusting to work after an intense weekend, but the silver lining of this odd time is that it’s award season! The Golden Globes were on TV and there was so much good red carpet FASHION! You guys, I am so impressed. Rare are the moments that I end an award show telecast without at least 20 moments of pure wardrobe confusion. Maybe 2017 is the year of pure chaos in all things but the red carpet? That being said, there were fashion fails, but I have to admit the list of deplorables is not “yuge”. So let’s sit back and enjoy some fashion hits and a few misses from the 2017 Golden Globes red carpet!
Best Dressed
Metallics and sheer were all the rage this Golden Globes and I think will be a common theme this award season. Also on trend, is romantic quaffs and old Hollywood minimal but smoldering makeup. The big shocker of the carpet for me was that the men really stood out! This almost never happens and despite lack of choices, men somehow consistently get it wrong. But this night was exciting. Not only were there bold suiting choices, but they were actually done well! Thank God.
Whether it is men or women, the people on this list really stood out and I could not get enough of their looks! Here are the Best Dressed for the 2017 Golden Globes.
Emma Stone
in Valentino
The starlet of the award season is sure to be Emma Stone for LaLa Land, so it is no wonder that she wore an actual dress of stars. This was absolutely perfect for her and it could not have fit better. It was a risk but paid off in every way. Her skin was flawless. Her hair and makeup were perfect. She looked like a starry dream.
Mandy Moore
in Naeem Khan
From pop-princess to full blown TV star, Mandy Moore really showed off her transformation in this gorgeous navy Naeem Khan. I think she looks so gorgeous and timeless. Well done Mandy!
Priyanka Chopra
in Ralph Lauren
This passed beauty queen is no stranger to a gown, but this gown makes her look fresh, young and laid back. Her hair is perfectly tossled to downplay such a formal gown and I loved the contrasting silver necklace. Maybe a half inch too long, but she looks like a movie star!
Evan Rachel Wood
in Altuzarra
One of the absolute BEST dressed of the night! Evan’s porcelain-perfect face is so gorgeous that even her short hair and a tuxedo couldn’t take away from her feminine beauty. The tux fit impeccably and her confidence is beaming.I am in love with this look.
Gillian Anderson
in Jenny Packham
Gillian Anderson may have been out of the American spotlight for a bit, but this X-files legend hasn’t missed a beat. She looked absolutely stunning in this ethereal Jenny Packham gown. My favorite part of this whole look was that hair and makeup. So good! She looked like an angel and stood out as one of the only few in white.
Donald Glover
I loved this look for Donald Glover, the Atlanta creator and star. I know it’s velvet and it’s brown, BUT it is two bold moves that were done correctly and made him look like the cool, award winner he is. He comes off hip and young, without trying too hard. Perfect for him.
Ruth Negga
in custom Louis Vuitton
This Loving actress was one of the boldest gowns on the red carpet. This Metropolis-like custom Louis Vuitton dress is so futuristic and cool. The newcomer looks like a pro in this metallic masterpiece.
Matt Bomer
in Giorgio Armani
It is not difficult for Matt Bomer to look gorgeous at all times, but this suit was definitely supporting his looks. It fit perfectly and was a timeless style. He is the perfect combination of old Hollywood and current.
Brie Larson
in Rodarte
Oh, Brie. You may have only been a mega-star for a few years now, but you have outdone all of the rest. This dress, this makeup, this hair! I do not even know where to start. She looks sexy, refined, beautiful, classic and new. Old-Hollywood glam to PERFECTION.
Ryan Gosling
in Gucci
Ryan Gosling is another man who could probably wear a burlap sack and still look handsome. The man you should expect to see on stage at every award show this season, is ready for the spotlight in this gorgeous Gucci suit. White tuxedo jackets can be difficult to pull off but this is the ideal outcome.
Naomi Harris
in Armani Prive
Naomi Harris is so beautiful that its hard to look at it, and that accent only makes her better! She looks like an statue in this Armani Prive’ metal straplesses gown. The stone detailing was insane! She had to lay down in the car on the way to the show because of the tightness and detail, but it was well worth it in my opinion.
Rami Malek
The new man to watch is anything but a robot in this suit. He has consistently been on a few of my best dressed lists, so clearly this guy knows what he is doing. I love the navy contrast and the fit is impeccable.
Gina Rodriguez
in Naeem Khan
Wow, wow, wow. Gina is not messing around. She looks absolutely stunning! This is another one of my absolute favorite looks of the night. I would wear this dress in an absolute instant. The amount of detail must have taking months to do and Gina’s skin tone makes it pop even more. This was iconic.
Kristen Bell
in Jenny Packham
This cute little fireball of a human looks fiery in this beautiful black beaded Jenny Packham. Kirsten’s hair was as good as I have ever seen it and the makeup was perfect for the look. For such a small woman she looks statuesque.
Milo Ventimiglia
in Ralph Lauren
Everyone’s favorite TV dad right now looks so handsome in this navy Ralph Lauren suit. I love the long hair, it gives the classic look a bit of edge.
Regina King
in Romona Keveza
Regina looks like a total queen in this beaded, silver bombshell-gown. Her body looks gorgeous and her arms are to-die-for. I like that her hair was is up and her makeup looks great. She is glowing in this gown and I don’t blame her.
Aly Raisman
in Rita Vinieris
This Olympic gymnast really deserves another gold metal for standing out among famous actors and actresses. This custom orange gown makes her look 6 feet tall. Her hair is romantic, her makeup is fresh and her accessories keep her young. She stuck this fashion landing.
Felicity Huffman
in Edition by Georges Chakra
Felicity is no stranger to the best dressed lists. She finds a way to stay hip and current over the years, and I love that about her. A metallic jumpsuit was so original and a unique choice. I loved the bold move.
Millie Bobbie Brown
in Jenny Packham
Millie really did score an “Eleven” in this cute little dress. Again, Jenny Packham is on this best dressed list. This dress is perfect for this young star and the shoes are super on-trend. I love her slicked bob and minimal makeup. she looked age appropriate and beautiful.
Tom Hiddleston
in Gucci
Swoon. Tom, you can basically do no wrong but luckily you actually did not do anything wrong here. This classic black double-breasted tux was great. He looks like a suave spy and everything is tailored perfectly.
Viola Davis
in Michael Kors
Never did I think a bright yellow sequin dress would make the list, yet here it is. Can we also talk about how insane her body is? To pull off a full sequin gown like this, you have to be in incredible shape. I loved this bold color on her! IT does look extremely similar to her light blue sequin gown from the Critic’s Choice Awards, but she still looks great. Side note, that haircut is adorable.
Tracie Ellis Ross
in Zuhair Murad Couture
Tracie with the haute couture knock out punch! This dress had intricate cage detailing and incredible bead work. It was straplesses and semi-sheer but so different than the norm. The bust was a bit tight on her, but the gown and the diamond knuckle rings made her look like a major fashionista.
Casey Affleck
in Dolce & Gabbana
This best actor nominee will be ever present on the award show red carpet this year. I love his combination of a perfectly classic Dolce & Gabbana tux and his grizzly beard. He looks like he doesn’t care, but according to that perfectly tailored suit, he does in fact.
Amy Adams
in Tom Ford
Starring as the lead in a Tom Ford movie pretty much assures that you will be dressed impeccably for the entire year. Amy knows what she looks good in and Tom knows fashion, so this combination will be a hit. I love a black sequin gown and this modern neckline takes this classic look up a notch. She looks hot.
Isabelle Huppert
in Armani Prive’
This dress stopped me in my tracks during the telecast. I had not seen it until the camera briefly panned the room and I let out a shriek, in a good way. This baby blue, sheer beaded masterpiece is INSANE. It is so different than anything else people wore. This french actress looked like royalty in this enchanting gown.
Wacky BUT Worked!
This is a new section I have added, because some dresses are so crazy and controversial that they either make the best dressed or the worst dressed list. The polarizing risks either pay off or end up bankrupt. But for me, these ladies’ looks were so wacky and different that they worked! I love these brave choices and knew they deserved a place on the best list.
Sophie Turner
in Louis Vuitton
I love the modern lines of this dress and the mixed media of patterns. I am not surprised that it is Louis Vuitton because they always make bold choices and they love to dress brave starlets. I think Sophie looks goth, cool, sexy and young.
Jessica Biel
in Ellie Saab
This cut is ideal for small chested woman and looks so chic. The hem in the front is slightly short but the lines of velvet and the belt make this dress so sexy and gorgeous! I love the silhouette and I think it was a cool choice.
Nicole Kidman
in Alexander McQueen
You either get this dress or you don’t. But boy, did I get it! Let’s first note, Nicole’s body is the definition of perfect and this dress could probably only be worn by her and runway models. That being said the sleeves, the sheer bustier lining and sequin detailing were all so romantic that it was hard not to stare. There is so much going on here, yet her beautiful face is still the showcase. I loved this dress and I love that Nicole has really become a risk taker in the fashion world.
Drew Barrymore
in Monique Lhuillier
I will say this dress was more beautiful and flattering on TV, but you get the idea. The cut was beautiful and her hair and makeup were perfect. It was so unique and super flattering. Drew stunned that night.
Worst Dressed
The worst dressed was a little disappointing to make this time, because so many good people landed themselves on a very bad list. I do not know what happened, but people who often make smart decisions had failed this night. That being said, A LOT of repeat offenders are back because they just don’t learn their lesson. Here is the worst of the 2017 Golden Globes red carpet.
Cuba Gooding Jr.
If you are going to try a risky trend or bold pattern, you had better make sure that it fits like a glove (Accidental O.J. pun intended.) This jacket is way too small on Cuba! I cannot believe they let him wear it. What could have been a cool choice was a failure. If the jacket does not fit, you must a-quit… wearing it.
Riley Keough
in Chanel
I know its Chanel, I know its couture and I know it is supposed to be vintage 20’s inspired. But it just swallowed her whole and made her look so old. Riley is the young, hot “it girl” and does not need this matronly hair, makeup and gown all in one look. It was a miss for me.
Kerry Washington
in Dolce & Gabbana
I do not know what is going on with Kerry lately but she has been on the worst dressed list frequently. This doilie of a dress is so unflattering I cannot get over it. It wasn’t even great on the runway. It is ill-fitting, has mismatched lining, and cluttered accents. Her hair, makeup and shoes are perfect but that dress is not.
Janelle Monae
in Armani Prive’
I am speechless. I do not actually know what to say about this. I have so many questions, starting with WHY? I do not know who I should be harder on, Armani or Janelle? This looks like a cheap prom dress that was made for a clown. The mullet hem, the billowed comforter-like skirt and the giant sequins are just too much for anyone to wrap their head around. That isn’t even counting the rhinestones sprinkled in her hair, or the mismatched shoes. I give up trying to understand this.
Chrissie Tiegen
in Marchesa
I know, it doesn’t make sense. Why would Chrissie be on this list and why would Marchesa be on this list? Because this was a metallic mess. From far away everything seems fine but up lose this unflattering frock was swallowing her up. There’s lace everywhere, coming out of everywhere. There’s frills on top of lace, on top of more frills. If your eyes do not focus on her gorgeous face or body, then there is something seriously wrong with the wardrobe.
Sienna Miller
in Michael Kors
For one of the cutest celebs out there with one of the cutest little bodies, this dress really dims her light. The dress did not fit her right. It was too long, the sleeves were odd and the cut-outs were not in a flattering location. It was so boring and outdated. I did not get it. The pony tail and bow is a cute idea but it did not coordinate with the dress, and from the front adds to the plainness. She looks about as unhappy as this dress does.
Sofia Vergara
in Zuhair Murad Couture
I do not know where to look. There is so much happening. Sofia is a goddess and usually sticks to the same EXACT silhouettes. So I will give her props for going out of her comfort zone. However, this looks like a gladiator costume. Once again, my eyes should always focus on her breathtaking looks but I am blinded by a whole lot of detail, metal and nonsense.
Heidi Klum
in J. Mendel
Heidi, Heidi, Heidi. You really just can’t help yourself. She is on every worst dressed list almost weekly. So I am not surprised that she strikes again. The fit is so unflattering on her, and she is a super model! The fit, squiggle designs, the random sheer panel and the awkward length are all wrong.
Teresa Palmer
in Armani Prive’
This girl is 30 years old, not 60. This dress is too mature for her. The neck is too high, there is too much material and it is too heavy for her tiny frame. For such a gorgeous young woman, this was a missed opportunity for a major fashion moment.
Sarah Paulson
in Marc Jacobs
I think Sarah sort of likes flirting with the idea of being on the worst dressed list. She is always taking risks and in the end I do not think she genuinely cares what people think. Which makes her a badass. I love her, but I do not like this dress. It is not flattering and looks home-made. I think you will be on the best dressed next time Sarah, not that you care.
Claire Foy
in Erdem
I was so excited to see this breakout star hit the red carpet with a bang! That sort of backfired. The Crown star is British, they often make bolder fashion choices, but this did not fit her. I think the 80’s sleeves are really the worst part. I picture this dress as a fitted, two strap gown and I really start to like it. But as is, this dress was not fit for a queen.
Olivia Culpo
in Zuhair Murad Coututre
Don’t kill me. I hate to do this to a fellow pageant queen, being Miss Universe she was essentially the mother of all queens. Olivia is a fashionista. Rarely does she make mistakes. She often chooses classic lines with a sexy twist. But this is just too much. The gown is overwhelming. I think if the bodice was plain it would have been easier to deal with. But it was all heavy patterns, heavy color and heavy beading. The makeup was exquisite and the hair was funky but the whole packaged look was just too busy for me and took away from her perfection.
Kristen Wiig
in Reem Acra
Kristen Wiig is a funky, cool-girl. This is not someone who is going for “classic.” She has a bit of rock star edge to her and I dig that. But I am not about hiding in a giant sack of baby blue lace, that is then lined with an eggshell colored slip. There is so much material here and coverage that it looks like it belongs on your grandmothers couch. I like the Mia Farrow hair, but this dress is just so wrong.
Amara Karan
in unknown
Amara is a new comer for me, but this dress is old school. It reminds me of the 80’s show Dynasty where women were dripping in diamonds, aqua-net and shoulder pads. This dress does not flatter her beautiful body and is just too mature for her fresh face.
Carrie Underwood
in Iris Serban
You know how I feel about Country music stars. I love them but they cannot dress. Sometimes they surprise you, but often times they play right into your expectations. IF this dress were possibly a different color, and that mom-do was up away from the busy collar, we may have a hit. Sadly that is not the case here. The makeup is too heavy for such a busy and light hued dress. This looks needs edits.
Trace Lysette
in Charbel Zoe
For such a total bombshell, the aggressive glitz is unnecessary. The dress seems like something you would wear to the AVN’s or a Mardi Gras party (not a compliment). It is nowhere near as classic as her beauty! Not to mention, this woman has an insane body and this dress does nothing for it. I don’t mind the color but this dress is not worthy of her.
Karrueche Tran
in Dolce & Gabbana
I am not quite clear on what Karrueche Tran was doing at the Golden Globes, but it appears that she jumped in a time machine to bring this dress back to the present. This looks like a high school prom dress from the 2000’s. She is a tiny person and very beautiful, but the dress is too long and out-dated. Not a good look.
Jeannie Mai
For a fashion commentator and “guru,” this girl has appeared on every worst dressed lists that I can think of. She almost never wears known designers, which is fine, but this dress is just confusing. The grey material looks like a Disney villian, and the random iridescent sheer panel is bizarre. This is all wrong.
Best Couples
This is a nod to all of those couples that looked as beautiful together as they did apart! It is hard to knock one look out of the park, let alone two! So these star duos deserve the credit.
Colin Farrell & his mother Rita
in Dolce & Gabbana
This is just adorable. Colin and his mother are here to slay. The Dolce & Gabbana tux fits Colin perfectly and his mother’s coordinating tux jacket is just too cute for words. Not to mention, her ultra cool red carpet sunglasses! Talk about a suave duo.
Elsa Pataky & Chris Hemsworth
Elsa Pataky in Zuhair Murad
This is the sort of couple that makes you sick. They are so perfect it is almost unbearable. Elsa would be on the best dressed list even without that hunk on her arms. This is how you do a metallic dress correctly. She looks like a million bucks. The only thing as good looking as her, is her husband Thor. That suit was made for that body. He has the ideal build and the ideal tux. What a pair.
Annette Bening and Warren Beatty
A classic look for a classic couple. These Hollywood legends really brought the Hollywood glamour to the red carpet. They both look so gorgeous and tasteful. A job well done for one of the most beloved star couples.
Worst Couples
Keri Russell and Matthew Rys
I love this couple so much that it made it hard for me to put them on this list. But the combination of her busy and bizarre animal frock and his nutty-professor hair and disheveled suit, made it necessary. I know they will get it right again, but this was not it.
Pharrell Williams and Helen Lasichanh
To be honest, this isn’t about Pharrell’s suit. He is bold and I dig the suit. It is about that ridiculous hat and his wife’s entire look. I know they are “fashion forward” and I do not expect her to attend in a high-slit Calvin Klein dress, but this is too far. She looks like she is attending a backyard picnic and is a total miss. Luckily for Pharrell he is only one accessory away from being a hit for me.
Now who was the Best & Worst Dressed winners of the night?….
Worst Dressed- WINNER!
Janelle Monae in Armani Prive’
I do not think this is a real surprise for anyone. This look was a hot mess and I do not understand any of it. She is so cool and I love her bold choices, but this was a disaster!
Best Dressed- WINNERS!
It’s a three way tie! There were three winners of the night Emma Stone, Gina Rodiguez and Brie Larson. In the end, Brie Larson was just PERFECT, Emma was a dream and Gina absolutely stunned! I think you could wear these looks 10 years down the road and they would still be perfect! Classic, beautiful choices from three fresh faces.
That’s it for the 2017 Golden Globes! Lots and lots of risks, some worked and others didn’t. But that is the exciting part about the red carpet fashion! Stay tuned for the rest of the red carpet’s best and worst dressed lists to come this big award show season!
