One of Belgium’s best exports has found its first home in the United States in Leesburg, Virginia – just 40 miles outside of downtown DC. The original Delirium Cafe, located in Brussels, Belgium, is famous for the more than 2,000 beers it offers patrons. It even holds the Guinness World Record for the most beers offered. Delirium Cafe USA, which opened May 15th, has an impressive offering itself. The bar has over 200 beers available on its bottle list and 26 drafts that rotate every two weeks.
Having studied in Brussels for several months in college, I couldn’t wait to visit the first Delirium to open in the US. After recruiting a friend to drive out to Leesburg, we eagerly settled ourselves at the bar for a drink while waiting for our table. We were greeted by a bevy of pink elephants – Delirium’s trademark – in the bright and welcoming space. Unfortunately, the rainy weather kept us from enjoying the patio out back. In addition to Delirium’s own beer varieties, the draft list includes traditional Belgian lambics, tripels, quads, and sours, and a few non-Belgian options as well.
Make sure to follow Delirium Cafe USA’s Facebook page as well to keep up with announcements and collaborations with local breweries – like they’re newly launched “Elephant in the Room”, a collaboration with Old Ox Brewery.
Unlike the original location in Brussels, Delirium Cafe USA also offers a lunch and dinner menu of pub fare. To share, there are classics like bar pretzels and cheese & meat plates – and of course french fries, or frites as the Belgians would say…in French at least. Belgium has 3 official languages after all (fun fact). At lunch there are several sandwich options, such as chicken & bacon, brats, and pork belly. For dinner entrees, there’s everything from mussel pots to fried chicken and waffles. Of course, there are waffles on the menu as well!
There’s even a small selection of beers upstairs that you can purchase!
