Real estate space in downtown DC is at a premium. Places who have it, hold onto it for as long as possible. That’s why new openings right on, or just off, the popular lobbying corridor K Street NW are few and far between. This also why when a new place comes along it’s exciting. Enter Maddy’s Taproom, which opened less than a year ago right on the corner of 13th and L St NW, a stones throw from K Street and just off Scott Circle, this beer-focused taproom provides a cozy environment, simple comforting food, and a very extensive beer list.

Posted on a large chalkboard that seems taller than the average District dweller are their beer options. As you can see, they have something for everyone.

The menu is not large, but it does have variety. The salads are large and filling. The Caesar is tossed with a ancho chili dressing, anchovies, and a Parmesan crisp.  Certainly enough for a lunch meal and not a starter salad.

The appetizer brisket quesadillas are made with slow cooked brisket made in house daily. Folded in a house-made tortilla with Chihuahua cheese, tomato, and cilantro finished with a crema sauce, is great for a starter or meal if you’re not starving. The side salsa is smoky and fresh, served with pickled red onions and crisp julienned  “slaw,” the texture and flavors are spot on.

For something more filling, try the brisket grilled cheese sandwich. Served on large, toasted Texas toast, the shredded brisket is very tender, and the tart tomatillos, bourbon cooked shallots, and quesadilla cheese are perfect compliments. A tad messy, but extremely filling.

Another comforting staple is their fried chicken sandwich. Served on toasted bread, the chicken breast cutlet is pounded thin and fried. The crisp lettuce helps add contrast to the large slices of fresh avocado (which I recommend spreading on the sandwich prior to eating). The spicy mayo pulls it together, although it could be a tad spicier.

Not always on the menu, is the tandoori chicken sandwich. Slow roasted pulled chicken in a spicy Indian-inspired tandoori sauce, this sandwich is filling and unusual. I’d grab in when offered.

All in all, certainly a welcome lunch spot for the downtown business crowd. Always full at lunch, opt to sit at the bar, or make a reservation. Great for happy hour as well.
