Scarlet Oak DC

“The official tree of the District of Columbia is the Scarlet Oak, best known for its brilliant autumn red color and usually found in the Appalachian Mountains can also be found on the corner of K & New Jersey Ave. in SE DC. Scarlet Oak offers fresh seasonal cuisine for brunch, lunch and dinner in a comfortable setting. The menu is focused on providing locally-sourced produce, meats and seafood, in addition to house made pizzas and pastas.  They also have an extensive wine, beer and cocktail program to compliment your meal.”

Scarlet Oak is a beautiful restaurant in Navy Yard equipped with a ton of outdoor seating- perfect for this lovely fall weather! We enjoyed some drinks, a few appetizers, and a couple entrees. In my honest opinion the steak was phenomenal and the happy hour drinks were well-crafted and only $5 (rail drinks, beer and wine from 3:30-7 pm M-F) and the rest of the food was pretty mediocre. Each item we enjoyed was packed with flavor and spices which I can totally appreciate, but what makes it a gem is the long beverage list and great happy hour. They have a little something special each day of the week for HH in addition:

MONDAY: $3 Tacos + $8 Margaritas
all night long || bar area only || spicy pork, blackened chicken, or fish tacos

TUESDAY:  $5 Select Bourbon/Whiskey

WEDNESDAY: Wine Night!
1/2 price bottles of wine all night

THURSDAY:  $8 Mules!
Moscow Mule (Tito’s)
Mexican Mule (Roca Patron)
Kentucky Mule (Old Forester)
Oak Mule (Absolut Oak)
Caribbean Mule (Pyrat Rum)

Moscow Mule & Golden Road Mango Cart (shout out to #beerfest2018)

Ricotta Gnocchi with Spicy Pork Sausage Bolognese, Butternut Squash, Parmesan, and Basil

(I was very excited about this but would not recommend- the gnocchi was over cooked and both the sauce and pork sausage lacked flavor)

Curry Shrimp with Jasmine Rice and Curry Sauce

(I liked this dish, it was FULL of flavor)

Blackened Mahi Mahi, Pico de Gallo, Guacamole, Lemon Aioli

(The fish was cooked well with balance of flavor and spices but got lost in the toppings)

Chicken Wings with Hot Sauce, Blue Cheese, Carrots, Celery

(A classic, approved by a Packers fan)

10oz. Coulotte Steak with French Fries, Asparagus, Red Wine Reduction

(I have a lot of love for this beauty and the Chef that cooked it to perfection)
