Pop into Pappe for Happy Hour

One of 14th Street’s newer additions, Pappe (which means ‘brother’ in Punjabi) is serving up some seriously delicious, authentic Indian food. Now, they’re expanding their menu to include happy hour specials as well. We’ve written about the food at Pappe before here at HungryLobbyist, but we all know that happy hour is a whole different ball game.  Happy hour is served daily in the bar area from 3pm – 7pm. Pappe doesn’t just offer drink deals during happy hour. They include a few of the appetizers from their awesome menu too!

The Drinks

Almost every place in DC has beer and wine on happy hour, but Pappe stands out with their signature cocktail offerings. They offer four from their regular menu on happy hour, and they pack quite the punch. If you can handle a spicy cocktail, I definitely recommend the Chillitini (tastes great while snacking on some naan or aloo papdi chaat). My favorite though was the Cardamom Gimlet. I’m very rarely order gin-based drinks, but I found myself ordering a second round of this one. It’s fresh and spicy all at the same time. The fresh ginger grated on top of the Indian Mule was a great touch as well.

The Food

For happy hour snacks, we tried Aloo Papdi Chaat, the Crab Pav, and the Tandoori Gobi. Everything tasted great and made for easily shareable food to nibble on while enjoying a cocktail or two. We were big fans of the slider-like Crab Pav and Tandoori Gobi in particular. Once we were seated though, we couldn’t help but stay for dinner. Let’s just say, our eyes may have been bigger than our stomachs. Our spread included: Allepey Fish Curry, Adrak Lamb Chops, Daal Makhani, Lamb Vindaloo, Garlic Naan, and Keema. Some of the standouts were the Allepey Fish Curry and the Adrak Lamb Chops. As someone who doesn’t gravitate towards fish – and very rarely would order sea bass – I will definitely be back again for that fish curry. If you’re a spicy food fan, I definitely recommend it. The spices on the lamb chops were also fantastic. Since the lamb chops aren’t served in a sauce, I do recommend adding some cucumber raita on the side. Somehow, we even found room at the end of the meal to try a few bites of Pappe’s desserts – a chai creme brulee and their take on a bread pudding.
