New Brunch Destination – City Winery DC

City Winery DC launched a brunch menu a few months ago, which we were able to check out on a recent visit. During the summer months, brunch is served on the rooftop and features local DJ’s; unfortunately, the rooftop was closed for a private event, but we did tour the space and it’s pretty awesome and open while still being covered. No bottomless brunch here, but every bottle of bubbles is served with an assortment of juices, seasonal fruits and herbs. We kicked things off with a wine flight, of which the sauv blanc and rosé were favorites.

Wine Flight

For starters, we ordered the burrata and avocado toast. The burrata was creamy and delicious, served with roasted beets, watercress, and a balsamic reduction. The richness of the burrata paired well with the sweetness of the beets, with just the right amount of bitterness from the watercress and some additional texture in the form of walnuts. The avocado toast was a decent version of this dish, although it could’ve used 3x the avocado.

Next up, we sampled the pork belly hash and the steak & egg sandwich. The hash consisted of large chunks of pork belly, potatoes, peppers, onions and mushrooms, and was topped with a poached egg. A great, hearty, dish, this one was the favorite of the day. BUT, we fought over the pork belly pieces – these fatty, salty bites were greatly outnumbered by the potatoes. The steak sandwich was another comforting dish – sliced ribeye, properly cooked to order, served open-faced with a dijonnaise, and topped with parmesan dressed arugula and a poached egg. The dish was savory and well balanced. The poached eggs on this dish and the others, however, were overcooked; a runny yolk would make them all that much better.

We ended the meal on a sweeter note with the brioche french toast. The toast itself had a good, crisp texture and wasn’t overly sweet, inviting you to customize the sweetness to your palette with fresh strawberries, blackberries and syrup. Served with mascarpone, this was a great dish to round out our brunch.

Overall, the food and drinks were solid, and the space is perfect for a large group brunch (multiple seating areas on different floors, including multiple rooftop spaces). Brunch is served on weekends from 1-4pm.
